My dear colleagues:
After a long period and at a time when the world is talking about recession, we are hereby announcing salary hike for our MT production staff. We have tried to create a write-up in a question and answer format. Should you still have any other questions, please feel free to write to me or lodge a case in FBay, and we shall address the same.

Q. Why was the necessity to hike the salary now?
A. As you know, we are now owned by Nuance. Nuance also owns Dictaphone, eScription, and Medremote platforms as well. Nuance is aggressively selling MT services because of which we are foreseeing huge business coming our way. We want to increase our capacity to be able to execute all the huge work that is bound to come our way.
   
Q. Can we know what hike we are receiving?
A. Sure, you can. We have kept the existing salary as it is but introduced an additional payout called as “efficiency bonus.” Following are the rates of efficiency bonus for designations who will be eligible to receive this payout.

Q. What are the terms and conditions to earn this efficiency bonus ?
A. There are 2 conditions that you need to meet:
   
Condition #1: Each one of you is expected to execute a minimum # of lines/day. Following is the expectation from each of your designation.

Softmed and Medremote will have same salary structure as of Netcare.   

Once you cross the threshold DSP lines/month of your designation, then calculate the % of your DSP for that month and you shall be entitled for the equivalent % of efficiency bonus.  Once you have calculated this figure, then you will need to adhere to condition #2 as below to arrive at the final efficiency bonus that you will be eligible for that month.

Condition #2: If you have not met the condition #1 criterion, then condition #2 will not even be applicable. 

As all know, a random auditing is conducted on all the work submitted as direct by you to the client.  This is called post-delivery auditing. Your post-delivery auditing accuracy should be equal to or more than 98% for the month.  If the post-delivery auditing accuracy is greater than or equal to 97% but less than 98%, then you will receive only 50% of the eligible efficiency bonus according to your designation.

Example #1: I am an editor in eScription. I worked for 15 days since I had taken 15 days of EL for my marriage. My line count for July 2007 is 15 days x 1300 lines/day = 19500 lines/month. I submitted 15,600 lines direct which means 76.92% DSP. My monthly post-delivery accuracy for the month is 98%.  What will be my DSP efficiency bonus earning? 

Answer: As you see from the above table, you should have submitted a minimum of 14,625 lines to be eligible for efficiency bonus. Since you have submitted more than this threshold, you will be eligible for efficiency bonus equivalent to your DSP%. This means 76.92% x 3000 = 2308 Rupees. However, we need to check if your monthly post-delivery accuracy is greater than or equivalent to 98% to ensure that you will get to take this full amount or not.  Since your accuracy is equivalent to 98%, you will get the entire 2308 Rupees.

Example #2: What if my accuracy was 97% in the above example.

Your efficiency bonus of 2308 would be paid @ 50% based on condition #1 to earn efficiency bonus i.e., you would get only Rs. 1154 as your efficiency bonus in addition to your existing salary structure.

Example #3: I am a proofer on eScription. I executed 50,000 lines for the month out of which I submitted 11,249 lines as direct and pended the rest 38751 lines. My monthly post-delivery accuracy is 99.8%.  What is my efficiency bonus?

Since you fail to meet the criterion of condition #1 which is submit at least 11,250 lines direct/month, you would not be eligible for any efficiency bonus even though your accuracy for the direct submitted lines is very good.

Q. When is this new salary structure effective from?
A. This new salary structure is effective from 1-Mar-09.
   
Q. What happens whenever a job is pended to client as per their instructions??
A. All those lines shall be considered as DSP.  If there is a problem in the reporting structure currently, then we will need to get it fixed.
   
Q. I am a SWAT Executive/Induction QC/QA/Senior QA, working for non-production department, statistics, HR, admin, software, etc.  When will I receive a hike?
A. We had not hiked the salary of MT production for a long time, and hence they deserved the first hike. Once we implement these changes, we will monitor the impact of this hike for MT production staff on our profit % and will surely work towards give a hike for all possible deserving people. 
   
Other observations:
1. We have given a hike of about 8% to 20% at various designations and performance levels.
2. While calculating threshold DSP lines, we have calculated expected lines x 22.5 days x 50%, which means we have given a relaxed target as compared to earlier 25 day/month calculation, which is an advantage for the production staff.
3. Even in our current salary structure, there is an expectation of 75%, 80%, and 90% DSP submission from various designations but we are NOT penalizing or differentiating for poor performers versus good performers. A person who executes 25,000 lines/month of DSP or non-DSP both get the same salary in the current structure whereas the person who submitted direct should have gotten higher salary and the person who submitted lower DSP should have been penalized. If you don’t at least nominally penalize the lower DSP person, then we will not have money to pay higher to the high DSP submitting personnel. The alternative salary structure would allow a hike of as high as 50% but again we were not confident that non-DSP people would take it in good spirits, work towards achieving higher DSP, and earn more but we thought they will find it easy to find alternative employment in other MT companies even if it is of same salary and no scope to earn more.
4. Please feel free to discuss and understand the reasons and challenges of creating a new salary structure (including hike) and request you all to appreciate the sincere attempt made to come out with this hike.
5. Dictaphone platform acquaintance amount is going to be completely zeroed w.e.f. 1-Apr-09 as was proposed last year when we had reduced the value of this allowance. This platform has seen a lot of improvements since it was originally used in 2005 and hence these changes.
6. Please observe that threshold monthly line count for line count incentives still continues to be as is and those daily targets are lesser than the threshold that we have currently set for monthly DSP line count. We are MT professionals, and we have set these targets differently for each platform based on the ease and difficulty of working on each of the platforms.
